Important Information:
Snacks: Please remind your child that snack should be a small item that does not require any utensils (great examples would be an apple, a bag of pretzels, a granola bar). Some students have been eating their full lunch during snack time which is disrupting class work time.

Curriculum Updates:
ELA: Next week students will continue to learn about opinion texts and that all good opinion writing has reasons and evidence to support it. Students will then analyze broadside models to prepare to write their own broadside.
Book Clubs: Historical fiction book clubs will continue. Each week, students will be required to keep up with their weekly reading, write discussion questions to bring to book club meetings, complete a reflection of their meeting, and complete one reading response activity from their book packet. This packet will be kept in their homework folder in case they need to finish at home. They may also read their book club books at home for their daily 30 minutes of reading homework.
Flocabulary: Unit #12 will be due on March 19th with the test the same day.
Math- Next week in math we will be multiplying fractions by a whole number. There will be a test on Thursday, March 19th.
Science- Next week, we will continue our unit on Rocks and Minerals! We will be learning about what rocks are made of and investigating their properties with in class experiments.

ELA: We will finish reading Divided Loyalties, a historical fiction play, to deepen our understanding of the Patriot and Loyalist perspectives during the American Revolution. They will take an assessment on writing a first person narrative from a character's point of view from Divided Loyalties. We will also start a unit on opinion writing.

Flocabulary: A new Flocabulary unit will begin on March 10th. The packet will be due on March 19th, with the test being the same day.
Math- Next week in math we will continue adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers as well as begin multiplying fractions by a whole number.
Science- Next week, we will begin our unit on Rocks and Minerals! We will be learning about states of matter and what rocks are made of with a Mock Rock investigation.

Read Across America: Next week Highcroft will be celebrating Read Across America week. Each day will have a different theme. Students will have the option to dress up daily to celebrate! See below for the Read Across Highcroft Week Schedule:“Reading Changes the World”

To encourage all 4th graders to use Dreambox at home more, we will be starting a class competition for the month of February. Right now we are asking that students log on and complete some lessons to increase their usage. The class with the most minutes logged at the end of February will win a popsicle party!

We will consider the answer to this question through the lens of the American Revolution. We will continue building background knowledge about the Revolutionary war and the perspectives of the colonists. Next week, we will begin reading a historical fiction play to deepen our understanding of the Patriot and Loyalist perspectives.

Also, please have your child bring in a bag or box for the valentines they receive. We know many students love the opportunity to decorate a Valentine's Day box. If they would like to do this at home, they are welcome to!

We will consider the answer to this question through the lens of the American Revolution. We will continue building background knowledge about the Revolutionary war and the perspectives of the colonists. Throughout third quarter, we will read informational texts as well as a historical fiction play to deepen our understanding of the Patriot and Loyalist perspectives. At the end of the module, we will synthesize our research to write an opinion piece from the Patriot perspective outlining the reasons colonists should join the cause in the form of a broadside.

Each week, students will be required to keep up with their weekly reading, write discussion questions to bring to book club meetings, complete a reflection of their meeting, and complete one reading response activity from their book packet. Animal Adventure Project Viewing: Parents are invited to join us for a project viewing on January 31st. Students will be sharing their writing pieces, the diorama project, and a Google Slide project. Please arrive at 9:30am.
STEM Night: The PTA STEM + Families Festival is back! The free festival will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6. The fun family event will include hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities; STEM career show and tell; mini STEM bookstore; STEM vendors; spirit wear; food trucks and more. The PTA invites all HDE students, their siblings and parents.

During independent reading time in class, students will continue to read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Students will practice developing strong discussion questions and work on a variety of reading response activities in preparation for upcoming book clubs. Historical fiction book clubs will begin the week of February 10th. Please look for a book club permission slip to be coming home in your child's folder. This form will have your child's book assignment and a place for you to sign your name indicating you are aware and approve of the book your child will be reading in class. At the end of the week, students will be taking an ELA check-in, similar to the one they take in Math class.
Flocabulary: The packet is due on Wednesday, 2/5 and the test will be on 2/6.
Math: Students will be taking the NC check-in to review quarter 2 skills as well as beginning a unit on fractions. This unit will correlate closely to fractions and students understanding 10ths and 100ths. There will be a test on Thursday, February 20th.
Social Studies: Next week students will learn about North Carolina's history and culture, dating back to the earliest explorers. They will explore why NC was founded and what/who impacted the state we now live in.

ELA: We will begin our third module in ELA next week! A focus of this quarter's learning is: How does one’s perspective influence his or her opinion? We will consider the answer to this question through the lens of the American Revolution. We will begin building background knowledge about the Revolutionary war and the perspectives of the colonists. Throughout third quarter, we will read informational texts as well as a historical fiction play to deepen our understanding of the Patriot and Loyalist perspectives. At the end of the module, we will synthesize our research to write an opinion piece from the Patriot perspective outlining the reasons colonists should join the cause in the form of a broadside.
Next week we will also continue reading the book, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. On Thursday we will have a book club "tasting" in preparation for book clubs. Students will begin book clubs the week of February 10th.
Flocabulary: We will begin unit 9 on Monday, 1/27. The packet is due on Wednesday, 2/5 and the test will be on 2/6.

ELA: Next week we will begin reading the book, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. This is an excellent historical fiction novel that takes place in Denmark during German occupation. We will also close read articles about World War II to build student background knowledge on this topic. We will respond to text based questions as well as practice developing discussion questions. This will help prepare us for book clubs during third quarter.

ELA: In ELA next week we will be starting Module 2. In Module 2, students will examine the defense mechanisms of one specific animal about which they will build an expertise. They will write an informative piece and a choose your own adventure piece about this animal. Students will read closely to practice drawing inferences as we begin research and make observations and synthesize information. In their writing piece, students will describe their animal’s physical characteristics, habitat, predators, and defense mechanisms. Next week we will begin researching animal defense mechanisms. We will close read complex texts and practice how to paraphrase a text.
Flocabulary: We will begin Unit 5 on Monday, 11/4. The packet is due on Thursday, 11/14 and the test is on Friday, 11/15.
ELA Assessments: ELA teachers give your child feedback throughout the writing process and conference with students weekly. ELA: We will continue to work on our poetry book project next week in class. Flocabulary packet is due on 10/30 and the test is on 10/31. Students will also read about the mystery of Roanake Island, become detectives with a scene with clues to solve, and write mystery stories with partners on the 31st.
ELA Assessments: ELA teachers give your child feedback throughout the writing process and conference with students weekly. When writing papers, we check in often with the students, but also let them revise/edit their papers their own. The rubric attached to the tests are used for feedback for your child's final grade.
Math: Students will continue their addition and subtraction unit (4.nbt.4). Students will take an assessment on November 5th.

Exposure to Animals in School Form: Your child will be bringing this form home. During our Quarter 2 science unit, your child will learn about various animal adaptations and habitats. There will be frogs, fiddler crabs, and millipedes in the room for students to observe. Your child will NOT be touching any of the animals during this unit. Siblings of rising Kindergarten for 2020-2021 school year: If you need to still register your rising Kindergarten student, you must complete the registration prior to April 1st in order to avoid being capped out and assigned to the overflow school. Curriculum Updates:
ELA: Next week students will continue to learn about opinion texts and that all good opinion writing has reasons and evidence to support it. Students will then analyze broadside models to prepare to write their own broadside.
Book Clubs: Historical fiction book clubs will continue. Each week, students will be required to keep up with their weekly reading, write discussion questions to bring to book club meetings, complete a reflection of their meeting, and complete one reading response activity from their book packet. This packet will be kept in their homework folder in case they need to finish at home. They may also read their book club books at home for their daily 30 minutes of reading homework.

ELA: We will finish reading Divided Loyalties, a historical fiction play, to deepen our understanding of the Patriot and Loyalist perspectives during the American Revolution. They will take an assessment on writing a first person narrative from a character's point of view from Divided Loyalties. We will also start a unit on opinion writing.
Book Clubs: Historical fiction book clubs will continue. Each week, students will be required to keep up with their weekly reading, write discussion questions to bring to book club meetings, complete a reflection of their meeting, and complete one reading response activity from their book packet. This packet will be kept in their homework folder in case they need to finish at home. They may also read their book club books at home for their daily 30 minutes of reading homework.

The fun family event will include hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) activities; STEM career show and tell; mini STEM bookstore; STEM vendors; spirit wear; food trucks and more. The PTA invites all HDE students, their siblings and parents.

During independent reading time in class, students will continue to read Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Students will practice developing strong discussion questions and work on a variety of reading response activities in preparation for upcoming book clubs. Historical fiction book clubs will begin the week of February 10th. Please look for a book club permission slip to be coming home in your child's folder. This form will have your child's book assignment and a place for you to sign your name indicating you are aware and approve of the book your child will be reading in class. At the end of the week, students will be taking an ELA check-in, similar to the one they take in Math class.

Valentines Day: If your child would like to pass out Valentines, they may bring them in on Friday, February 14th. Also, please have your child bring in a bag or box for the valentines they receive. We know many students love the opportunity to decorate a Valentine's Day box. ELA: Next week we will begin reading the book, Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. This is an excellent historical fiction novel that takes place in Denmark during German occupation. We will also close read articles about World War II to build student background knowledge on this topic. We will respond to text based questions as well as practice developing discussion questions. This will help prepare us for book clubs during third quarter.
Flocabulary: We will be taking a one week pause for Flocabulary. We will introduce Unit 9 on Monday, 1/27.
Math: We will continue our unit on comparing fractions. The unit assessment will be on January 28th.
Science: We will have the animal studies unit assessment on Tuesday. A review guide will come home on Thursday, January 16th. We will then create Google Slides presentations for the Animal Learning Experience.

The Mittens are in the front Lobby of the school. Each mitten will list a child's wish item for you to purchase and donate. The names of the recipients are anonymous. Students who meet the goal of 800 minutes read over the eight-week period will receive two free tickets to a Hurricanes home game. They will write an informative piece and a choose your own adventure piece about this animal. Students will read closely to practice drawing inferences as we begin research and make observations and synthesize information. In their writing piece, students will describe their animal’s physical characteristics, habitat, predators, and defense mechanisms. Next week we will begin researching animal defense mechanisms. We will close read complex texts and practice how to paraphrase a text.

Exposure to Animals in School Form: Your child will be bringing this form home. During our Quarter 2 science unit, your child will learn about various animal adaptations and habitats. There will be frogs, fiddler crabs, and millipedes in the room for students to observe. Your child will NOT be touching any of the animals during this unit. The program challenges area elementary schools to read 2,020 books, asking individual students to perform 20 minutes of reading outside the classroom each day during the first semester. The program runs from September 30th through November 22nd. Students will be able to login online through their Wake ID portal to track their reading times and books read. Students who meet the goal of 800 minutes read over the eight-week period will receive two free tickets to a Hurricanes home game. Schools that reach the 2,020-book goal qualify for the chance to attend the Cool School Field Trip at PNC Arena. Please encourage your child to participate in this program.

Students will also write a corresponding written response describing where they drew their inspiration from. This poem will be shared at the Poetry Slam learning experience on October 30th. Math: Students will continue to explore place value by identifying the value of digits and comparing numbers. (4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2, 4.NBT.7). There will be an assessment on Thursday, October 17th.

Biking to School: Due to safety concerns and the number and locations of bike racks on campus, only 4th and 5th grade students may ride bikes to and from school. 3rd grade students may begin to ride bikes in April.
